Car lovers, start your engines: the annual “Kiwanis Rocks” car show is right around the corner!
From 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, car enthusiasts from across Long Island will gather for a rockin’ fun time at the joint car show and pancake breakfast. The rain date is scheduled for Sept. 22.
The iconic car show is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Kiwanis Club of the Islips and Bay Shore. While the fundraiser took place in the parking lot outside of Islip Town Hall last year, this year’s event will be held at Amvets Post 18 in East Islip, located at 141 Carleton Avenue.
“We wanted to give the Amvets some exposure, and focus more on veteran support,” said president of the Kiwanis Club of the Islips-Bay Shore, Sandy Flandina.
Proceeds from the Kiwanis Rocks car show will go toward the organization’s veterans outreach, which includes their involvement with a local organization, Cooking for Long Island Veterans.
“We supply hot meals to veterans at home, nine meals per week, at no charge,” shared Flandina. “We also are going to do some outreach to local VFWs. Some of them are going through hard times, so we are going to make monetary donations to them.”
The Kiwanis Club also recently distributed six high school scholarships totaling almost $5,000, and sent five local children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York this August. Additionally, they do outreach on an individual basis, assisting local people with groceries, school supplies, or whatever they might need.
The Kiwanis Rocks car show puts the “fun” in fundraiser, giving car enthusiasts a great day of mingling and sharing their passion for automobiles. The club will be distributing awards for cars on a “people’s choice” basis; attendees will vote on the cars that they like, and awards will be given based on their choices.
Even if attendees are not interested in cars, there is still plenty to do at the car show. A pancake breakfast will be served at a cost of $10 each, though veterans will eat free. Local rock band Camelot Punks will be playing live music, while vendors and local organizations will have booths. About 30 raffle baskets and a 50/50 will also be available.
