Long Island senior wins national scholarship for volunteer efforts at senior homes

High School senior Emma Georgia is one of five teens across the country to take home the $1,000 Glammy Scholarship Award. The scholarship, awarded by GlamourGals Foundation, was presented to Georgia at the 18th Annual Glammy Scholarship Awards, held virtually on May 21st, 2022.

GlamourGals Foundation, a nonprofit that inspires and organizes teens to combat elder isolation through one-on-one makeovers and manicures at senior homes, grants scholarships to exemplary volunteers within the organization. Georgia, who will be attending University of Nebraska with majors in Psychology and Spanish, went above and beyond as the president of her chapter, serving the seniors in her community by organizing several campaigns to bring joy through cards, paper flowers, suncatchers, and slipper socks to four different facilities.

Initially being under involved in extracurriculars, Georgia grew into an active community member after finding her passion at GlamourGals. In her junior year, Georgia practiced her skills in social media to expand the chapter to fifty more members. Becoming president of Bayport-Blue Point High School’s GlamourGals chapter further allowed her to practice her creativity in organizing events around the pandemic to serve the seniors in new ways. Pursuing her passion for “helping battle the stigma and severity of mental health” in her community has confirmed her professional ambition to become a psychologist.

“My main goal in every card I made, or every event I planned this year for GlamourGals was to be able to remind the local seniors that they have people in their corners, supporting them, even if it was not always seen physically,” said Georgia as she reflects on her leadership at GlamourGals.
