Your guide to 9/11 commemorations


This year is the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and as such, many towns and organizations are holding ceremonies and events to honor the lives lost. Below is a list of some local commemorations.

Town of Islip

Sunday, Sept. 11

11 a.m., Islip Town Hall (655 Main Street, Islip)

The Town of Islip is hosting a 9/11 memorial ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in front of Town Hall.

Islip Library

Tuesday, Sept. 13

7 - 8 p.m., Islip Library (1 South Country Road, Brightwaters)

In recognition of the 21st anniversary of 9/11, the library will welcome back Gerald Raffa. Raffa was a federal agent who experienced first-hand both collapses. He will give a PowerPoint presentation detailing his experience with photos included.

St. John’s Baptist Church

Sunday, Sept. 11

7 p.m., (1 Berard Blvd., Oakdale)

A candlelight vigil in remembrance of all those lost on Sept. 11, 2001.


Sunday, Sept. 11

7 p.m., The Common Ground at Rotary Park (46 Gillette Avenue, Sayville)

Come for a moonlight memorial service at The Common Ground.
