Winter Wonderland at Waterdrinker Family Farm

Classic holiday films theme, open through Dec. 23

Waterdrinker Family Farm’s latest seasonal extravaganza immerses attendees in timeless holiday classics and offers enduring wintertime experiences. The farm’s Winter Wonderland opened to the public Saturday, Nov. 19, with holiday lights cropping up around the farm in lieu of, well, crops.

While many of the farm’s staples are still in place, from mini golf to barnyard animals and a slew of photo-op displays, several new additions imbue winter holiday cheer in the hearts of guests, including a synthetic ice-skating rink, projected holiday films, and campfires.

“People just come from miles around to cozy up by the fire with hot cocoa and s’mores,” Marc Weiss, one of the owners of Waterdrinker Family Farm, said. “People enjoy the holiday movies and listen to Christmas music while spending time with the family.”

Of course, roasting marshmallows and ice skating isn’t just for families and children. Groups of friends flock to the farm and its neighboring brewery, for fun nights out.

“I wanted to come out because it’s magical,” Miranda McManus, sitting around the campfire with her friends, said.

“We love Waterdrinker; it’s bringing us the Christmas spirit very early and we have so much fun here all the time,” Kallie Rosario, another friend in the group, added. “After the fire, we will be going to the brewery to grab a drink.”

The campfire setup is encased in a series of aluminum Airstream campers with decked-out halls, courtesy of another member of the Weiss clan.

“They’re all vintage camping Airstreams; we got six of them set up,” Weiss said. “The inside of each is decorated with slightly different decorations, but all holiday themed. This is really my Uncle Wayne’s; he’s been collecting Airstreams for years, and Waterdrinker is kind of the perfect spot for the holidays to showcase them and let people enjoy them.”

The outdoor arrangement boasts another personal touch from Wayne Weiss: a series of props perfect for photo ops from the 1983 classic “A Christmas Story.”

“ ‘A Christmas Story’ is one of my uncle’s favorites,” Weiss said. “We recreated the scene when he’s changing the tire and he starts cursing… and of course, the famous leg lamp.”

In the farm’s greenhouse, the Waterdrinker staff turned to another Christmas classic for inspiration for a new holiday light walk-through: “A Christmas Carol.”

“We’ve always done the spooky walk, so we’re good at building things quickly,” Weiss said. “Leslie Merkert was a huge part of putting the ‘Christmas Carol’ house of lights together, and Sierra Seidler made the giant Ghost of Christmas Present.”

“We just wanted a space that’s always nice and warm and inviting. We darkened out the greenhouse so that it’s always lit, so any time of day you’ll see the holiday lights.”

Before they enter the Dickensian light show, patrons pass through the farm’s gift barn, loaded with poinsettias, figurines, and other decorations anyone needs to deck the halls. Guests can also catch a Rankin/Bass stop-motion Christmas classic while they enjoy the company of indoor barnyard animals, from Finn the goat to tortoises Zeus and Hercules.

Across the way, in the Long Island Farm Brewery, guests can order up one of two new brews perfect for the holiday season. The Lighten Up winter ale is imbued with maple syrup, vanilla and winter spices, and the Perfect S’mores pastry stout boasts a chocolaty taste with notes of graham cracker, milk, and marshmallows.
