During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people discovered new passions and hobbies. Michelle Wilson found not only a new passion, but a way to turn that passion into a business. A little under two years ago, Wilson, of Islip Terrace, founded Sprinkleswithshell, a custom dessert business.
“It started during quarantine,” Wilson said. “I was really bored and I wasn’t really sure what I should do, but I was always interested in baking.”
Wilson started small, making boxed desserts and decorating them, but as she gained experience and expertise, she learned how to make items from scratch and searched out different recipes.
“I just had a lot of fun with it,” she said.
After deciding to create a business, she created accounts on Instagram and Facebook, where she shared photos of her delicious and beautiful treats.
Wilson’s most popular items are her cakesicles, which are similar to the ever-popular cake pops. To make them, Wilson makes homemade cake as well as homemade frosting, and then crumbles up the cake and the frosting together before placing them in her molds to shape them. The treats are then dipped into chocolate. In addition to her cakesicles, Wilson also makes specialty cakes, cupcakes, chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate-covered Oreos, and chocolate-covered marshmallows. Her favorite item to make is cakes because of the challenge and creativity.
“I really enjoy watching it come from nothing, to something that makes someone feel really special and happy,” Wilson said of her cakes. “Usually if I’m making a cake, it’s based on an interest that they [the customer] really have, and when they see it they get really excited.”
