On May 11, head to the Head of the Harbor in Brightwaters for the village’s 35th annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale! Beginning at 8 a.m. and ending when the bountiful inventory runs out, the sale is the perfect opportunity to purchase beautiful flowers to gift that special someone on Mother’s Day as a token of your love and appreciation.
Cards made by children, donated from a Mother’s Day card-making workshop held by the Brightwaters Art Council, will also be sold at the plant sale while supplies last.
Beginning 35 years ago, the annual event has a history that is old, but not forgotten.
“The sale began the year after Hurricane Gloria. There was a committee, the Beautification Committee of Brightwaters, that said, ‘Let’s sell some flowers so we can replant the village trees that were lost in the storm,’” shared village deputy clerk Jeanne Pirkl. “Now going forward, it is just a Mother’s Day plant sale to enhance the beautification of the village.”
Throughout the event’s history, it has always been strictly run by volunteers seeking to brighten the days of those around them.
“Over the years, there have been some unbelievable residents who have run it,” added Pirkl. “Currently, two resident volunteers are very instrumental in getting this off the ground each year: Jennifer Bartlett and Ann Shierant.”
If you are interested in volunteering to help with the sale and willing to give an hour or two of your time, please email deputyclerk@villageofbrightwaters.com.
Mark your calendars for the Mother’s Day sale and get to the Head of the Harbor while supplies last!
