School Board wants state to mandate training and licensure for security guards

In response to the 27 school mass shootings across the country since Jan. 1, 2022, the Sayville Board of Education passed a resolution on June 5th to implore New York State to amend its regulations regarding adding a training/certification process for school security guards. The resolution was passed unanimously by the board.

The resolution states that “acts of violence against the nation’s youth represent a clear and present danger to the safety and security of students nationwide and in particular in the State of New York,” and that “the board of education recognizes its duty and responsibility to guard against such reprehensible acts of violence on school grounds and provide a safe, orderly, and respectful environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The board currently employs security guards to patrol the buildings and grounds of the school district to enforce school rules and ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors, and “believes knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to a school district are necessary to promoting and maintaining safe and proper conduct, and ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds.”

Further, the board believes that knowledge of the means and manner of providing security services within a school district and the facilities are “equally necessary to promoting and maintaining such safe and proper conduct while on school grounds that current training and licensure for security guards within the State of New York require no such credentials for security guards employed by school districts.”

The resolution resolves to have the New York State Education Department assist the board in carrying its duty and obligation to provide a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors while on school grounds by adding or amending the laws, rules or regulations of the state and/or the department to include as a mandatory prerequisite to being employed by a school district in the State of New York as a licensed security guard, that said individual receive, as part of their training and licensure.

The resolution further requests that a separate and specific credential signifying training and knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to school districts together with the means and manner of providing security services to schools within the state.
