Sayville Memorial Day plans

SAYVILLE

With Memorial Day being the official start of summer, Sayville is set to bring another year of festivities next week, but with emphasis on remembering the fallen.

Eileen Tyznar, president of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, said that Sayville is the perfect town with its nostalgic, hometown vibes that brings in hundreds of people to shop, eat and relax.

She said that many of the stores will be hosting Memorial Day sales, and the restaurants will be busy, but the parade hosted by the Sayville Fire Department and service is what the holiday is really about.

“Sayville truly encapsulates the meaning of what Memorial Day really is about—observing and remembering the servicemen and women who lost their lives protecting our country,” she said.

To remember this, members of the Sayville American Legion 651 recently planted 690 American flags outside the chamber office to represent the servicemen and women who lost their lives in service. All 690 were members of the Sayville community, and many are buried in St. Ann’s and Union cemeteries.

“When the parade rounds the corner, it’ll be seen by everyone,” she said.

The annual Sayville Memorial Day Parade is to be held on Monday, May 27, starting at 9 a.m. at the corner of Handsome Avenue and Main Street in Sayville. It will then proceed east on Main Street, south on Middle Road, and west to Sparrow Park. A service at the Sayville Fire Department will follow the services at Sparrow Park.

BLUE POINT

The Blue Point Fire Department will have a parade to celebrate Memorial Day beginning at 11 a.m. on Blue Point Avenue and Middle Road on Monday, May 26. The parade will proceed north to the firehouse for a ceremony.
