The Sayville Girls Varsity Soccer team was the 3rd seed entering the Suffolk County Finals after defeating Kings Park, 3-2, on Oct. 29 at home.
The girls went on to beat Islip away 1-0 on Nov. 1.
Now, as they head to the county finals, they will now face Shoreham Wading River, who they tied during the regular season 1-1. The game will take place at Shoreham High School at 4 p.m., tomorrow, Nov. 5.
Depending on the results of the game, the winner will face the Nassau County winner for the Long Island Championship game on Saturday, Nov. 9, details are to be announced.
The winner of that game will go on to play state finals the following weekend.
“Our team is comprised of a core of seniors with a mix of juniors sophomores and a few freshmen,” said assistant coach Bryan Lillis, proud of the group of girls. “This year’s team is a really special group who is and has since day one been very self-motivated.”
“We knew during the first week of the season that this group was special and that they were hungry to get better each training session and hold each other to a high standard and that had paid them dividends as we continue to the county finals!” he added. “They have great chemistry amongst themselves and have tightened their bond along the way by playing for each other. They have always believed in the 'we' and not the 'me' mentality. They know that it will take every player on this team to win a championship and that is the goal they have set for themselves.”
The coaching staff includes John Burke, Ashley Hunter, and Lillis. However, according to the coaches, all the credit goes to every player on this squad.
