Santa’s magic at Meadow Croft

‘Christmas aglow’

The Bayport-Blue Point Heritage Association hosted its annual Christmas tour at Meadow Croft in Sayville this past weekend, commencing with a private tour on Friday, Dec. 1, the first-ever preview gathering held by the committee.

Leanne Berg headed the Christmas committee as she has since 2014 and typically begins decorating in early October.

“As soon as the summer tours finish, we get started on setting up for Christmas,” said Berg about the long-treasured tradition in the BBP community.

Each year, a theme is discussed and chosen, and for 2023, “Christmas Aglow” focused on “people enjoying a beautiful home with Jolly Old St. Nick and Santa in all his forms,” according to Berg.

While there was a sizeable Santa collection in the Heritage Association’s decorations, many of this year’s were donated or on special loan.

Eric Haysch, who throughout the year handles the historical lighting of Meadow Croft, lent his Santa collection that was on display in a glass case next to original Wedgewood from the home.

“Taking whatever the theme is and making it visible in each room is the goal—every room you walk in here, there’s Santa. You’re not going to miss it. In previous years, you’d walk into the room and know right away the theme,” said Berg.

The Roosevelts, who famously owned Meadow Croft as a summer home, spent Christmas in their Manhattan townhouse.

“Depending on the year, it’s anywhere between 10 to 15 Christmas trees, plus what guest decorators bring in on their own, so it’s very easy to make Christmas happen,” said Berg.
