An extra dedication was honored on Monday, May 31, for the Memorial Day parade that concluded at Memorial Park on Middle Road and Paulanna Avenue, with the park celebrating its 75th year.
Formed in 1947, nearly right after the end of World War II, Memorial Park has served as an honorary resting place for those from Bayport killed in action from conflicts as far back as the Revolutionary War.
The high school band led the service with patriotic hymns that while boisterous and energizing, were paradoxically but appropriately somber and stirring.
Bob Draffin, president of the Bayport Civic Association, gave a rousing speech genuflecting to the fallen heroes of Bayport and the current community members who work to preserve the beauty of the town in their stead.
United Methodist pastor Sejin Cha gave a blessing for the event.
