Last week in varsity boys lacrosse Suffolk Division II, the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms hosted the Port Jefferson Royals for a Friday matinee. The Phantoms came into the contest with a record of 3-1 and the Royals at 2-2. It was a marvelous afternoon on Academy Street in Bayport, with the sun dazzling at around 70 degrees at game time with signs that summer will imminently be approaching.

Bayport-Blue Point wasted no time and on the first shot of the game 14 seconds in, junior, Jameson Smith scored to draw first blood. Under two minutes later, senior Zach Kroog scored to make it 2-0. Shortly after, Ben Morris threw one into the mesh for the third goal. Smith and Morris continued their dominance, tallying another goal each and as the first quarter expired, Bayport-Blue Point led 5-0.

The scoring barrage continued in the second quarter and as the first 24 minutes concluded the Phantoms’ lead, 10-0. Neil Foley and Gavin Locascio each scored in conjunction with the five-point second quarter. Port Jefferson got on the board in the third quarter thanks to the contributions of junior Kyle Scandale. In a little over three minutes No. 2 (Scandale) scored twice for some Royals momentum. Subsequently, the BBP offense netted a couple more scores, one from Maclin Keyser.

For Port Jeff, senior Daniel Koban roped a score with 7:05 remaining in the contest for the Royals’ third goal. The final score of the game came from BBP eighth-grader Gary Merrill late in the fourth. Defending the net for Port Jeff was goaltender Peter Murphy, who completed the game with 15 saves. And on the other side, Eric Grahn and Matt Nilan both made three saves apiece for the Phantoms.

After 48 minutes and four quarters, the final buzzer echoed on Academy Street and Bayport-Blue Point defeated Port Jeff 13-3.
