FedEx driver retires, community holds party

Retired Fedex ground driver, George Buechner, has served the Blue Point community for over 40 years. To thank him for his dedication and service, Ali and Joe Salvatore held a send-off party for him at their home on Nelson Avenue on Thursday evening, July 24.

“A trusted person in the community, Buechner has been delivering to my storage unit for work and my home for years. I know he has been great to many other businesses and families. He will be missed,” said Ali.

Well-wishers came by to share drinks and snacks provided by the Salvatore family and gave George cards and other mementos for his four-decade service to the community.

During the busy holiday season, Buechner would bring Mallomars to people on his route. When the Salvatores had their daughter, Buechner dropped off a package with diapers and wipes.

“He really enjoyed people and helping them. He was so trusted and loved by all,” said Ali.

“George was more than just your local Federal Express driver; he was a staple to this area who became a friend to many of his customers. As my husband and I always joked, George ‘delivered’ much more than packages. He not only cared about, but also wanted to know the names of the residents on his route. In a time when social interaction is limited, George knew us when we got married and bought our first home here in Blue Point, to now having our children in which George got to know and see grow up,” said Ali.

“Not limited to us, there are many more situations just like just like ours in which George was more akin to a friend.  In this respect, we felt the need to honor him for his 20 years of service to our family, most coming in the Bayport-Blue Point locale. His infectious smile and genuine care will surely be missed.  We were so happy that some of his customers/friends were to able to celebrate his service to our great community,” said Ali.
