The Connetquot girls lacrosse team extended its winning streak to three last week after its thrilling double-overtime triumph against Bay Shore. The final score was 6-5.
Junior defender Madison Mileti netted the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the second session as the Lady Thunderbirds, who are on the playoff bubble at the time of this writing, improve to a record of 7-4.
Six different players scored for Connetquot, but it was Mileti’s tally at 1:55 of double OT that iced the game.
“It was really exciting to be able to score that goal to win it,” said Mileti, who was caught in the middle of a mob of her joyous teammates, seconds after she ripped home the winner. “Brooke Elizalde made a really nice pass, and I was able to finish. Most importantly, it was great to get the win for the team.”
The game was knotted at 2 after the first 25 minutes of play, and Connetquot head coach Sal Piscitelli delivered a fiery speech at halftime, imploring his Thunderbirds to pick up their play. Bay Shore entered the game with a record of 2-10 and has long been mathematically eliminated from post-season consideration.
“I think they knew what was at stake and I was trying to get them to understand that every game is important,” said Piscitelli. “We can’t afford to take anyone lightly. I gave them a reminder of this at halftime and they responded.”
Elizalde and her sister, Sydney Elizalde, also scored goals for the Lady Ts, as did Jamie Elliot, Bianca Graham and Reagan Silhan. Senior goalkeeper Cassie Hall made eight saves to earn the victory. Senior Allegra Ryan had two goals and an assist for Bay Shore, and Marauder goalie Cassie Hall was busy throughout the match, having to make 10 saves.
