Islip Terrace man embraces love on '90 Day Fiancé'

The reality television series “90 Day Fiancé” captures the riveting journeys of intercultural couples—Americans and their foreign fiancés—as they navigate the thrilling complexities of love, cultural differences, and societal pressures. With just 90 days to wed before their K-1 visas expire, these couples must overcome significant hurdles or face the heartbreaking reality of separation.

Though the series is widely regarded as a guilty pleasure, there is no guilt in tuning in to root for a fellow neighbor! Season 11, which kicked off on Feb. 16, features Greg, an Islip Terrace man, and his fiancée Joan, who is from Kampala, Uganda.

The story of Greg and Joan meeting is one of chance, or fate, depending on whether or not you’re a romantic. After falling asleep on the man’s shoulder, Greg met a Ugandan man on an airplane, and after chatting for over six hours, Greg was invited to Uganda to stay in the man’s guest house.

While visiting Uganda, Greg met Joan, a highly educated non-governmental organization (NGO) director who is deeply committed to her career and values stability and security. The pair spoke briefly, but did not exchange contact information.

Greg shared that he still could not stop thinking of Joan a year and a half later. Once Joan friended Greg on social media, the rest was history and their romance flourished. Greg visited Uganda again and proposed to Joan on her birthday.

As the film crew follows Greg around the greater Islip area, it is interesting to see Long Island represented on the big screen.

“Honestly, I really love Long Island… it’s just the driving here is so aggressive, it’s insane, it’s unbelievable,” Greg said to the film crew while merging onto Sunrise Highway. “But there’s just so much to do, so many people, there’s always something going on.”

A potential obstacle for Greg and Joan’s relationship is his living arrangement. Greg currently lives with his mother in Islip Terrace and does not have a stable job.

“The average starter home on Long Island is probably anywhere from $400,000 to $500,000. I’m nowhere near that position to put down a deposit on a family home,” said Greg. “Joan kind of is a little skeptical about it… she wants a place that we can have privacy for ourselves and just be ourselves together. But I’m hoping she’s cool with the fact that we’re possibly going to be living there for a year up to two years.”

With 11.3 million viewers last season, the entertainment value of “90 Day Fiancé” is undeniable. Join the millions and watch how Joan and Greg will tackle the challenges of their relationship by streaming Season 11 of “90 Day Fiancé,” Sundays at 8/7c on TLC.
