Sayville girls basketball vs. Harborfields
The Sayville Golden Flashes hosted the Harborfields Tornadoes last Tuesday on Brook Street in girls varsity basketball.
It was Fan Day at SHS, and the two League V division foes tussled on the hard court as both teams looked to climb the ladder in League V.
Both are neighboring in the standings, with Sayville holding a marginal lead.
The two adversaries last met on Jan. 6 when Sayville surmounted Harborfields 48-26 at Harborfields. Sayville was looking to snap their three-game losing streak and inch closer to a playoff berth.
Ava Vadyak of the Golden Flashes tabbed the opening points of the evening, going from downtown for 3.
Sophia Montalto dubbed a 2-pointer a couple minutes later to make it 5-0; then Mia DeSimone threw up a floater and it was 7-0.
Harborfields got on the board after a bucket by Jill Newman. Fallon Santoro scored a field goal to add to Sayville’s lead with 2:10 left in the first quarter, followed by a free throw converted by Maddie McKillop, and shortly after McKillop amplified the scoring barrage after she swooshed a triple pointer through the mesh to give the Golden Flashes 14. It was 14-5 at the conclusion of the opening period.
At the start of period No. 2, Ava Vadyak once again christened the scoring after she heaved a trey from behind the arc. Fallon Santoro summated a free throw giving the Golden Flashes 18. The Tornadoes swept back into the game when Maddie Michalopoulos put up a layup; then Jill Newman assessed two free throws to give their team 9 points. Mia DeSimone flung one through the net just seconds prior to the end of the quarter and it was 21-9 Sayville at halftime.
When the third quarter commenced, DeSimone picked up where she left off, tossing a basket through the net for 2. Shortly after, Lucy Livingston tossed a deuce for 2 points. Two more buckets incited the plethora of points as Vadyak and DeSimone compiled a bucket each and Sayville had 32. Aniela Marino heaved a floater from just inside the arc with 11 seconds left in the third and it was 34-15 after three.
The final score was Sayville, 47 Harborfields, 19. Sayville improved their overall record to 11-4 while Harborfields fell to 8-7.
Sayville boys basketball vs. Mount Sinai
Last Thursday was Fan Day at Sayville High School and it was time for a boys varsity basketball League V faceoff between two division counterparts.
The Mount Sinai Mustangs trekked to the South Shore and tipoff was at 5:15 p.m. in the gymnasium on Brook Street.
The Golden Flashes came into the bout in second place with an 11-5 record, while the Mustangs in fourth place came into the roundball session at 10-5. The first two minutes and 19 seconds were scoreless.
Brian Vales of Mount Sinai was the points inceptor after he notched two free throws. Eleven seconds later Vales tacked on a deuce, and it was 4-0.
Richie Carmody conceived the first points of the evening for Sayville after making a free throw, then shortly after made a basket and the score was 7-3, Mount Sinai.
It was 11–5 Mustangs at the end of the first quarter. Andrew Chandrika bagged a fadeaway shot for Mount Sinai for the second period’s first points; then after both squads traded buckets, it was 15-7 with a little under six to go. Richie Carmody orchestrated two baskets worth triple points in the second quarter.
Dominic Pennzello tallied the final points of the second with less than a minute to go and his team had 28 points. At the conclusion of the second, Mount Sinai had a hefty lead at 28-19.
Blake Kolsch scored a trey, then Pennzello made a deuce and Mount Sinai had 33 points early in the third. During the triadic frame, Michael Carmody netted a 3-pointer and a 2-pointer, his brother Richie summated a 2-pointer, while Logan Maha chalked up a 2-point basket.
At the end of the third it was 43-28 Mustangs. The Carmody brothers added to their impressive performance of the evening when they both heaved 3-point baskets through the mesh during the fourth quarter. In the final minutes, Brian Vales, Dominic Pennzello, and Andrew Chandrika all put up 2-point buckets to add to Mount Sinai’s lead and Richie Carmody tallied another 3.
Mount Sinai dominated the contest winning by a final score of 56-41.
