This past Saturday, people brought their four-legged family members to the Islip Animal Shelter to enjoy the sunshine. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., they were invited to participate in the egg hunt, enjoy lawn games like Jenga and Connect Four, take photos at the Easter-themed photo station, eat some ice cream (or pup cups), and, most importantly, meet the many adoptable furry residents.
The photo station featured vibrant spring décor, including yarn-crafted hanging Easter eggs and a plush pink rug. A large red basket filled with colorful plastic eggs sat nearby, as did a basket full of pet accessories. Many families opted to put a bunny-ear headband on their dogs, truly embracing the Easter spirit.
Dog mom and grandma duo Rachel and Pat brought their dog Circey, a former resident of the Islip Animal Shelter whom they adopted in 2023. Circey, who was named Allie at the time, was just 8 weeks old when she met her prospective family. Rachel and Pat were immediately drawn to the German shepherd/Doberman mix because, despite her small size, she was the loudest. Circey enjoys playing with other dogs and loves her tiny cookie toy.
Throughout the day, adoptable dogs were brought outside to socialize and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. Two-year-old Kaiser is one of the newest residents, arriving at the shelter five days ago. Kaiser is also a father, but his puppies and their mom are being fostered. Upon arrival at the Islip Animal Shelter, the small, scruffy black dog was extremely shy, hiding in the back of the kennel and avoiding interaction with both humans and other dogs. However, on Saturday, Kaiser was out in the sunshine making a mess with his pup cup and eager to meet people. The change in Kaiser’s behavior was night and day.
Event organizer and assistant supervisor at the Islip Animal Shelter, Jessica Abbate, shared how wonderful it was to see former furry residents thriving with their found families.
“Getting the dogs adopted is the most rewarding thing. That’s why we do what we do here. And it’s great to see them come back with their families. Every dog that comes in deserves a home,” said Abbate.
In addition to the variety of family- and dog-friendly activities, there was also a 50/50 and a raffle basket full of summer-themed goods. Funds raised will go toward a dog treadmill, which will help the dogs stay fit physically and mentally.
To meet your forever friend, stop by the Islip Animal Shelter Monday through Saturday. Adoptable pets can be viewed from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m.
