East Islip’s Special Olympics team delivered stellar performances at this year’s Special Olympics Long Island Region Spring Games, held May 3 at the Plainedge Athletic Complex in North Massapequa. The East Islip squad—including East Islip High School and Middle School students as well as several alumni—brought home eight gold medals, six silver medals and four fourth-place ribbons.
In preparation for the competition, the annual Kick Off Bagel Breakfast took place on the morning of May 2, attended by the athletes, their families, coaches and volunteers, administrators, and Board of Education members. High school volunteers helped to organize and run the breakfast event, which was provided by the district’s Special Education Parent Teacher Organization.
“Our team embodies the spirit of the Games, with each athlete putting forth their best efforts, and many leveling up to new challenges and personal bests,” coach Diane Wahrenburg said.
