Boat parade theme announced!

The people choose an ‘American Christmas’

The oldest Christmas boat parade on Long Island will take place on the Patchogue River on Nov. 22 and 23 with a theme, chosen by the public on Facebook, of “American Christmas.”

“It’s not too early to think about the parade, and the Patchogue River Christmas Boat Parade Committee is hard at work to bring you another, last best weekend on the river,” said event chairman, Billy Kaiser. “We had great feedback from people voting for the first time on this year’s theme, and ‘American Christmas’ closely beat out ‘Pirate Christmas.’

The anticipated event will kick off the weekend on Saturday night, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m., with the very popular People’s Choice Award. Spectators of all ages will view 40 or so boats, at two different marinas. They will be connected by a ferry service so drivers will only have to park once. The viewing will take place at the Harbor Crab and the Sandbar.

After viewing at the two marinas, spectators will be able to vote for the boat they like best. This year, they will still include the new category added last year: Best Music. The hours for the party are from 5 to 9 p.m. Both of the restaurants will be open for food and drinks.

“The Christmas Boat Parade is the most fun you will have on the Patchogue River until next year,” said Kaiser.

The Patchogue River community has supported the Christmas Boat Parade, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, continuously since 1996. The parade this year is on Sunday, Nov. 23. Last year’s new start time will continue, with a horn blast at 5 p.m. to signal the captains to “light ‘em up,” and Patchogue River will come alive with boats beautifully lit.

The parade will commence up the Patchogue River to the Sandspit. The judges, who brave the cold, are treated to the captains showing off their boats for trophies. Next up the river is Drift 82, followed by The Oar, Sandbar, FINS, and finally the Harbor Crab.

Last but not least, the one we have all been waiting for, Santa Claus arrives to the amazement of all the children. For more information visit Facebook, Instagram and their website at patchogueboatparade.org
