Biannual Yard Sale

Posted

The Islip United Methodist Church held its biannual yard sale on Oct. 11, just one day before the nor’easter was set to strike Long Island. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., everyone was welcome to stop by and find something new. The church’s thrift shop was also open, selling discounted Halloween costumes.

The church hosts the yard sale twice a year as a way to raise money for projects the church supports or to help maintain the church. Currently, the church is under renovation to become Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. The project started back in May of this year.

At the conclusion of the yard sale, the church had raised $2,000. It will help go toward the church’s ADA-accessible renovations. One vendor, Nancy Vazquez, who is a member of the church, donates 20 percent of her proceeds to the Islip United Methodist Church.

Vazquez sells honey, beeswax candles, lip balm, beeswax perfume and other items made by bees she owns. She said it is a way for her to give back to her church, which supports her and allows her to set up as a vendor during its biannual yard sales.

Other items at the sale included Christmas decor, board games, glassware, luggage, furniture, photo frames, books and more. There was something for everyone who stopped by to take a look.

The thrift shop is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, the church will have its Christmas Fair on Dec. 6.
