Another veterans group home restored

Posted

United Veterans Beacon House (UVBH), Long Island’s largest nonprofit veterans’ service agency, cut the ribbon on Friday, Nov. 15, for its newly refurbished group home under its Restoring Homes Restoring Hope housing initiative.

This is the third of 11 homes slated for refurbishment since UVBH launched the initiative two years ago. Long Island companies, foundations, and individuals are invited to sponsor a home in whole or in part, and each home will henceforth be referred to as the sponsors’ home.

The Bay Shore home refurbishment is the result of a collaborative effort by Long Island Real Estate Group (LIREG), through a competitive grant award of $30,000, and the ongoing generous support of National Grid and Lowe’s.

In addition, SC Contracting installed a new kitchen, while Asplundh Construction contributed its expertise to the finished product.

The transformation of the dated home to a well-appointed, energy-efficient residence for formerly homeless veterans, befits the military service of the six who now reside there.

“Once again, since launching the Restoring Homes Restoring Hope program a couple of years ago, we have seen Long Island companies and foundations step up to sponsor and/or actively contribute to the complete refurbishment of group residences in need of repair,” said UVBH president Frank Amalfitano.

“Only through the generosity of our fellow Long Islanders have we been able to complete three homes; we have eight to go. I know in my heart that we will get there.”

The Bay Shore home houses six veterans and is funded in part by the VA Administration.

The updates include new roofing, siding and windows, new kitchen and kitchen appliances, new bathroom, new flooring, doors and fixtures throughout the house.

UVBH anxiously anticipates the refurbishment of the eight remaining homes as it seeks sponsors to complete the Restoring Homes Restoring Hope initiative.

United Veterans Beacon House is a Long Island-based 501(c)3 nonprofit providing housing and specialized wrap-around services to homeless veterans and veteran families. www.uvbh.org
