Christmas cookies at Crickets in Sayville

Santa Claus came for a picture-perfect visit to the old-English-style pub, Crickets, with the help of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce and Douglas Elliman Realtors. For over 20 years, Crickets has been hosting its popular Cookies with Santa event every December for families to have that coveted photo with the man of the season.

The Sayville chapter of Douglas Elliman has been helping to host the event for the past 10 years with this year was particularly popular, as the line of families stretched beyond the backdoor of the restaurant upon opening at 10 a.m.

“It’s so wonderful to see families return year after year,” said lead coordinator for the project, Caroline Sweezey. “The children who come are as young as 4 weeks old! We’ve seen so many kids today and it’ll be a nice new group of students in the school district in a few years.”

In keeping with the theme of inclusion—as the chamber has tried to make all events, especially Miracle on Main, entertainingly inclusive for all family members and ability levels—Cookies with Santa featured more than just sweet treats. While the traditional shortbread cookies and candy canes were aplenty, local Sayville baker, Mayra Robayo of Precise, whipped up some gluten-free oatmeal cookies for those with special dietary needs. There were also glow sticks for Santa visitors who could not partake in any of the sweets.

“It’s important to make all children feel happy and included in these events. The holiday season should be celebratory for everyone,” Sweezey said.

Sweezey Photography was on hand to take photos, provided for free to all families in attendance. At 11:30 a.m., the count was around 240 visitors for Santa (half adults, half children) with a long line still winding around the cozy booths of Crickets’ front room.
