Fireman Santa takes break from parade to help stuck car

During the Bayport Fire Department’s treasured Santa run down the blocks of Bayport and Blue Point on Sunday, Dec. 17, a community member flagged down Santa’s “sleigh” for the day  (Pierce Fire Engine) at around 11:15 a.m., after she drove on Nichols Road and discovered a yellow car had gotten stuck in the muddied grass in the wooded area by Purick Street.

“I quickly turned onto Purick and headed south on Sylvan Avenue. I came across flashing lights ahead only to discover it was Santa and his elves,” said Sal Makely.

The Bayport Fire Department was in the neighborhood handing out candy canes.

Makely spoke with Bayport firefighter Rich Migale, who quickly maneuvered his elves and sleigh to the accident site.

“These wonderful volunteers didn’t even ask a question; they just took care of the situation and got back on Santa’s sleigh,” said Makely and added, “The Bayport Fire Department has always been a huge part of our community. A man in need with the elves that jump in for a good deed.”

Bayport 2nd assistant Chief Brandon DeMulder said, “This was such a great job done by the entire crew involved, and we are so happy that we were able to help the motorists get back safely on the road with no injuries to anyone.”
