Growing local kickboxing studio expands services

Joe Marcus has been involved with martial arts for most of his life. His growing gym, KickFit Bohemia, uses kickboxing to help people achieve their fitness and self-defense goals.

Joe performed Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and Jiu Jitsu until his 20s, but eventually fell out of practice. Facing health issues after gaining weight in his late 30s, he returned to martial arts to get back in shape. He helped revive a kickboxing program at a gym in West Islip, eventually working with national chain iLoveKickboxing.com from 2011 to 2015. But in that time he felt there were better ways to use kickboxing to improve people’s lives.

In 2016, he opened KickFit in Bohemia, with the plan to use real fighting moves in the routine, and to make the experience fun and worthwhile for members.

“I wanted to create a fighting-fitness gym hybrid,” Joe said. “Everything we do here is just a little more real.”

Joe’s gym has grown recently, after the closure of iLoveKickboxing studios in Bayport and Lake Grove. He’s taken on about 60 new members and hired additional staff to accommodate the growing schedule. He now offers 47 kickboxing classes and three Muay Thai classes per week.

Joe added that his independence has allowed the classes to be different and have fewer restrictions, and he can accommodate for members’ goals. He hired additional coaches and a nutritionist to round out his staff – which was formerly mostly him and his service dog, Ally. Ally is on hand for every class and is the KickFit mascot.

Kickboxing, Joe said, is generally a great form of fitness. It helps with stress relief, and overall is beneficial to your health and well-being. Kickboxing uses your own bodyweight to perform technique, and classes allow you to go at your own pace and meet individual goals, which are usually similar to those around you. Joe also focuses on helping members master techniques and making sure everyone is safe.

Joe said those considering joining the club should come with an open mind, and be looking for a fun, effective workout. He added that a membership gives you structure and motivation in your fitness journey. KickFit offers a free class your first time. Come expecting to learn new things and to make a new furry friend.

“You commit to me,” Joe said, “I’ll commit to you.”
